The (Azouzetta) Azu Small Water System was established in 1984 and is owned and operated by the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG). The water source for the Powder King Ski Village Water Service Area comes from three drilled wells with submersible pumps that draw from an aquifer, which receives recharge strictly from the surrounding watershed.
The water is of good quality with all measured parameters meeting the Canadian Drinking Water Standards and The Northern Health Authority requirements. The exceptions are the nuisance parameter iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), which produces a red scale accumulation inside the galvanized piping. This can build up and cause significant line blockage. To aid in the prevention of source line precipitate Fe/Mn build up, the lines are periodically treated, by flushing, with HCl and NaOH. This is accomplished without shutting down the system.
