Waste Characterization Study results
Results from a waste characterization study conducted in fall 2023 were presented to the Regional District Board of Directors. As part of the study 55 different samples of waste were reviewed and categorized by source, including transfer station, industrial, commercial institutional, single family, and residential drop off. Overall, the garbage stream consisted of:
- building materials (32%)
- compostable organics (20%)
- paper (19%)
- plastic (8%)
The last waste characterization study was completed in 2018. Overall, building materials showed a significant increase from 2018 to 2023. Decreases were observed in the plastics, non-compostable organics and compostable organics categories from 2018 to 2023. The studies provide information on the effectiveness of existing waste diversion programs and identify new opportunities for waste diversion.
Regional Hazard Study update
The Regional District is part of a study looking at regional geohazard risks like floods, steep creeks and landslide risks. The study is conducted by Fraser Basin Council and BGC Engineers who provided an update to directors. The assessment will identify areas where hazards could impact populations, buildings and infrastructure. Other project partners include the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, City of Prince George, Village of McBride, Village of Valemount and the District of Mackenzie. Work is underway with a final report expected in July 2025.
Arts, Cultural and Heritage Grants increased
The Regional District is increasing the value of grants for its Arts, Culture and Heritage Grant program. The Board of Directors approved increasing the maximum grant from $5,000 to $10,000. The grants are available to non-profit organizations who have an arts, culture or heritage project in the region.
The Board also approved minor changes to eligible expenses with the hope that the grants can have a bigger impact in supporting non-profit organizations who are delivering arts, culture and heritage programs, projects and initiatives within the Regional District.
Community Grants
The Board approved the following requests for Community and Recreation Grants:
- $20,719 to the Nukko Environmental Lake Weed Society for harvester trailer and operating expenses
- $5,605 to the Nukko Lake PAC for swim lessons
- $40,000 to the Red Rock/Stoner Volunteer Fire Department for phase two of the generator project
- $5,000 to Cariboo-Ferndale Community Association for snow removal costs
- $10,000 to the Huble Homestead/Giscome Portage Society for a pole shed
- $500 to the Dunster Mushroom Society for the Robson Valley mushroom festival
- $5,000 to the McBride Daycare Society for the childcare centre
- $500 to the Open Gate Community Garden for the annual Seedy Saturday event
- $263 to the Robson Valley Community Services for the health fair facility rental
